It can often be difficult to ensure warehouses and factories are kept well ventilated, but proper ventilation in a factory environment is absolutely essential for both your employees and your equipment and materials.
Adequate ventilation in a factory environment is needed for a number of reasons, such as the need to moderate temperatures, reduce humidity, remove hazardous fumes and monitoring and maintaining moisture levels.
Fresh and clean air in a workspace enables a more productive and healthy workforce. Poor air quality can actually seriously impact the health of your staff, with symptoms including :
• irritations of eyes, nose, and throat
• nausea, dizziness
• dry skin and rashes
• mental fatigue, headache, and sleepiness
• airway infections, cough
• hoarseness, wheezing
Having fresh, ventilated air in the workplace is covered under the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992. It essentially states that by law workplaces need to be adequately ventilated in the proper manner. This means that clean air needs to be drawn from an external source outside of the workplace and circulated around the building.
This is necessary to dilute and remove humid air and provide sufficient air movement within the building to make the air feel fresh.
As well as providing sufficient fresh air to breathe, the regulations also require that a workplace has ventilation to successfully remove excess heat and maintain the heat levels.
You must also ensure that any excess contaminants, from dust to harmful fumes, are properly removed. In small workplaces like a small office, for example, doors and windows may well be sufficient to comply with the regulations but in larger premises like industrial factories, mechanical ventilation will be required.
When considering the ventilation in a factory environment, you need to consider a number of aspects, including: air quality, temperature, humidity, energy efficiency, cost efficiency, and environmental impact. These will all have a bearing on the design of an effective ventilation system for the factories of today. Before making any considerations about the installation costs, energy efficiency and safety of the ventilation system for your facility, you need to consider various areas of your facility and identify the ventilation requirements of each.
