Can Stainless Steel Corrode?

Stainless Steel Corrosion

Stainless steel is widely known to be one of the most useful materials on the planet. It is used in kitchens, various appliances, pipes and ducting. Stainless steel is so popular because it is strong, durable and does not corrode. But a question that has been on most of our lips, is how infallible is this material? Can it ever rust or become damaged?

How is stainless steel made?

Stainless steel is made up of carbon and chromium steel, which is melted together with various different other materials, and then put through a series of processes to get the end result. It is because of this process that stainless steel is strong, durable and can withhold massive strengths and rust and stain resistant. Despite this process, can stainless steel corrode?

Corrosion and rust:

The material can actually succumb to pitting corrosion, which can cause problems for industrial pipes and tanks, but this happens on a very small scale, under very particular conditions. This happens when there are less chromium atoms mixed into the stainless steel. Stainless steel is much more resistant to corrosion than normal carbon steel or steel that has been galvanised, but it is not impossible for rusting or corrosion to occur.

Why stainless steel is great for ducting:

Our team of engineers at Airmatic assess every ducting requirement individually, making sure that all ductwork and stainless steel ducting is completely unique and best-fitting for the conditions and surrounding environment. Stainless steel ducting is great for industrial environments that work with a lot of corrosive chemicals, or environments that create extreme temperatures. This is because the material is extremely durable and will not corrode when met with harsh or hazardous chemicals, unlike galvanised steel, or normal steel.
